After recovering from a serious high speed accident with a "Kudu" in February this year which made him the first round winner of the ARC in Tanzania - Richard Himmel with co-driver Adolf Botes scored an impressive win in the Total Rally of South Africa on Sunday.

Driving a Subaru Impreza WRX (formerly owned by Schalk Burger) Richard Himmel also won the N4 class (5th place overall) in the South African series when due to the rough forest conditions no South African  drivers finished the N4 class at all.

Second overall was the current ARC Champion Muna Singh and David Sihoka from Zambia also in an Subaru Impreza and third in the ARC class were again Zambians Paul Monge and Ray Thornicraft in a Subaru Impreza.

The overall event was won by Serge Damseaux and Robert Paisley driving the prototype S2000 - Toyota Corolla Runx RSi. The car is still under development and the FIA homologation is expected to be complete by 1st September 2005 . Second overall in its debut was the prototype VW Polo S2000 car of Jan Habig and Douglas Judd.

55 cars started the Total Rally of South Africa with 22 homologated cars in the field. Conrad Rautenbach and Peter Marsh from Zimbabwe surprised everyone with an incredible turn of speed in their new prodrive Subaru Impreza WRX and at one stage had moved into second place overall. In the longest 60 km stage however they stopped due to gearbox failure.

Early leader of the rally was Johnny Gemmel in a Subaru Impreza but fell out due to engine failure. Fomer ARC champion Fernando Rueda also retired with mechanical problems. Girls Lola and Megan Verlaque rolled their Subaru early in the event.

Also missing due to the bizarre accident which killed two of their service crew while driving down to South Africa were top contenders Riyaz Kurji and Sayed Kadri from Uganda .

The rally started in Petoria and ran over 290 km of special stages in the Ermelo and Baldplass areas.

South Africa acheived a world first by running the FIA's newest formula of S2000 using two make, namely Toyota and Volkswagen. Comments from one of the FIA observers was that S2000 cars sound great and are spectacular to watch and the sooner the FIA reliase this the better for world's rallying in the future. This is a very huge acheivement by the two manufacturers from South Africa and they have done Africa proud with their acheivement.

The event was run as a candidate for the 2006 WRC and many top FIA officials including Mr. Jacques Regis - President of the WRC Rally Commission were also present in South Africa .

Only 20 cars finished the rally with only 3 homologated cars finishing.
