Report of the Dunlop Zimbabwe Challenge Rally - 2005 African Rally Championship - Round 3

ZIMBABWEAN CONRAD RAUTENBACH BECOMES YOUNGEST WINNER OF AN AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIP RALLY EVER

Image21 year old Conrad Rautenbach from Zimbabwe became the youngest winner of an FIA African Rally Championship Rally when he won the third round the Dunlop Zimbabwe Challenge Rally today in Harare Zimbabwe.

Navigated by Peter Marsh in a Subaru Impreza WRX, Rautenbach led from the start to finish in the 400 km rally.

Conard Rautenbach is also currently driving a Citroen C2 Super 1600 car in the Junior WRC and definatly used all his experience gained from there in this Zimbabwe Rally.

Zimbabwe's Jess Watson and David Milner were second overall in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 and third overall in a spectacular drive was James Whyte and Phil Archenoul also in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 which must be very satisfying after their disqualification from the Rally of South Africa when their car failed in final scrutineering due to a rear brakes problem.

Last ARC round winner  Richard Himmel and Adolf Botes from Namibia finished fourth overall in their Subaru Impreza WRX and 2004 ARC Champion Muna Singh and David Sihoka from Zambia were fifth overall.

Dissapointing retirements were top contenders Riyaz Kurji and Sayed Kadri when their Subaru puncture ran onto the rim and when they stopped at the control the grass under the car caught fire and forced them to retire. 'Rally Chicks' Lola and Megan Verlaque also bowed out with Gearbox failure on their rented Subaru Impreza.

21 cars started the Dunlop Zimbabwe Challenge Rally with 16 homologated cars in the field. The rally started in Harare and ran over 249 km of special stages in the Norton and Westgate areas on private farms on the outskirts of Harare.
15 cars finished the rally.

Zimbabwe Rally organiser worked against great odds to stage the very well organised rally inspite of the crippling fuel and foreign exchange shortages that Zimbabwe is experiencing at present.

There were 3 starters in the 1600cc CUP for this event and the winner was Craig Bond and Tony Rowley in a Toyota Corolla RSi.
