Report of the Rally of Tanzania - 2005 African Rally Championship - Round 1

UGANDANS KURJI AND KADRI VICTORS IN TANZANIA

In what seemed to be a repeat secenario of last year, Ugandans Riyaz Kurji and Sayed Kadri driving a Alpha Team Subaru Impreza won the first round of the 2005 African Rally Championship - The Knight Support Rally of Tanzania on Sunday.

Kurji led from start to finish and dominated the event with a spectulcar show of sideways motoring and returning to the finish with a clean and un-damaged car....rare occurance for this very rapid Ugandan driver.

Second overall was the reigning ARC Champion Muna Singh and David Shioka of Zambia also in a Subaru Impreza after enduring suspension problems throughout the event..

Third overall was a complete surprise with 22 year old Navraj Hans from Arusha navigated by Kenyan Frank Gitau in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4. Hans set second fastest time on the first stage of the event inspite of starting from a

lowly Car No. 23 position and won the Most Metorious award from the organisers.

Kenyans Azar Anwar and Kashif Sheikh were fourth overall and the 1600cc Cup class was won by Elefter Mitraros and Paolo Paganin from Rwanda in 10th overall position.

Top Tanzanian crew was Issa Mohamed and Hassan Mamdali in 5th Overall position driving a Subaru Impreza.

The organisers did Tanzania proud...with a very well organised event supported by the Goverment with the Tanzanian Vice President flagging off 36 cars on Saturday morning with 22 homologated vehicles, a new record for Tanzania .

Noteable retirements were Rudy Cantanhede and David Israel from Burundi with a gearbox problem on the last day of the event, Zambians Paul Monge and Ray Thornicraft rolled their new Subaru Impreza early in the rally and top Tanzanian Omar Bakhressa and Akhtar Nayani also retired their Subaru Impreza with mechanical problems while lying fourth.

10 cars finished in the main ARC rally and the route was 562 km with 283 competitive kilometers based at the plush New Africa Hotel in the centre of Dar-esSalaam.

The new sponser Knight Support made a very visible presence with Fire engines, ambulances and secruity all around the route.
