Adrenaline as Rally Table overturns in Luwero

Going to the route this morning had a lot of promises. With Jas Mangat in the lead, after the super special in the Lubiri, the chasing pack took the bull by the horns and by end of the 4th section in Kalule, it was clear the Zimbabwean Crew of James Whyte and P. Archenoul meant nothing but business. This crew went ahead to lead most of the sections as Jas Mangat futile endeavours to retain top position gave him dizzy heights and it is no wonder he was forced to retire with a ball-joint problem in the 6th section at Kikubanimba. His section times tell it all as he was neck to neck with Whyte up until he gave way to the roaring monsters right on his tail.

All three former Uganda National Rally Champions have had different stories to tell. Ponsiano Lwakataka’s first section is something of a story he would not like to remember, having had several uneventful incidents with crowds and obstacles in the Nkondo- Kalule section 3, where he lost up to 0:11:42 compared to Whyte’s 0:09:55. Ronald Ssebuguzi, still acquainting himself with his new machine has done well so far and concluding the day in 2nd position even with a 4 second penalty, he surely is not complaining. Dr. Ashraf Ahmed just did not start off well, his car needing fire fighters even before going through the first section of the day ( CS 3 at Nkondo).

However, former ARC champion, Charles MUhangi has lighted up the day having missed out on the super special stage and picking up a penalty of 0:14:14, he has showed he still has a lot left in his old back, after so many years out of the roll-cage since early 2005, the man who ruled Uganda and Africa in the 1990’s impressed much. His consistence showed the seniority in the hot seats with veteran co-driver Frank Nekusa. We can only speculate what the standings would have been had the crew had no time penalty.

Brave boy Nasser Mutebi put up a show in a weaker Subaru N4, at one time in CS4 rivaling Rwandan Davite in 4th position but mechanical problems slowed him down pushing his good start to 6th at the end of the day. He can only reorganize with the overnight recess. However, Davite also suffered a suspension problem that caused his retirement just as the day closed in CS14 Naluvule. By then he was just “flying” his Subaru N10 posting fastest time (0:06:00) in CS10 in Kalule to Service. James Whyte made 0:06:28 in the same section.

However, Godfrey Lubega, Abdul Samad Mohamed, Shafiq Ssemujju, Edson Mungyereza,  Geoffrey Kiyaga are all still fighting on into the final day alongside Kenyan Ben Muchemi and Rwandan Cristakis Fitidis and we cannot say it is over until it is over.

Others who did not finish the day include Susan Muwonge with an engine problem in CS12, Wycliff Bukenya in Evo7 could only go up to CS3 when he encountered a mechanical problem and Gatonye James was time-barred .

For now, end of CS14 was a good welcome to an exhausting day filled with incidents and fans and drivers can only wait for the final day on Sunday to regroup for a final show down.

The heroes of day 1, super special in Lubiri were the fans and yet they turned villain in Luwero as they overwhelmed some sections and therefore it goes without saying that some had to brush life with the fast and furious machines.
