2009 Kenya Press Releases

SATURDAY 4th JULY 2009 - 11PM
TUNDO GRABS LATE LEAD AS DUNCAN RETIRES

CARL Tundo was the
overnight leader despite struggling against champion Lee Rose. Rose led Leg 1B
of the KCB Safari rally for the better part of the day and showed little signs
of rust as he took an early lead into Day 2.

But Rose was
restricted to 4th overall after Leg 1B after suffering two punctures at CS6 Lake
West end.

Rose who finished 10th
at leg 1A (Uhuru Park stage) cleared his path like a tornado leaving the entire
park for the dead but the punctures made the difference.

Zimbabwean oldie
Jamie Whyte ascended to second spot after Rose’s gremlins.

It was a dusty day
of disappointments.  Tundo became the
closest challenge to Rose the moment Kenya Champion Baldev Chager suffered  punctures.

Rose, who has not
rallied since November last year, opened a 0.27seconds lead from 2007 Champion
Carl Tundo after a fearless and flat out drive into the first run of the 47Km
Soysambu-Elementaita competitive stage.

Proceedings after
the first leg was a clear indication that the 2008 KCB Safari rally would once
again be a Kenyan affair. Last year, the event was a three-horse race from
Rose, Tundo and Chager who forgot the rest of the field and were fighting an
almost private battle.

Alastair cavenagh
of Kenya was lying 3rd on day two followed by Lee. Following day two
results, the KCB safari diadem appears to go Tundo's way as Rose is trailing
him by 3.35. All that Tundo needs to do tomorrow (Sunday) is to keep his cool
and he will be home and dry.

Ian Duncan was the
first major casualty after his clutch packed up. Duncan was grappling with the
same problem at CS1 Uhuru Park stage and was classified last in the supplementary
on Leg 1A. He didn’t start Leg 1B today.

South African ‘Rally
chicks’ kissed the Safari rally goodbye after breaking the front left shock on
CS3 36km Lake West stage.

“We got into Jas
Mangat’s dust thus lost clear sight of the route. As a result we ended up
hitting a rock bashing our front left shocks,” said Lola. By the time of their
exit, the rally Chicks were lying 4th.

Lola and Meagan Varleque,
however, looked trim on their VW S-2000 contraption despite the gremlin. The VW
Polo S-2000 is the only Super-2000 formula at the KCB Safari rally. The Polo
was previously driven by Jon Williams at last year’s safari and won the Pirelli
Star Driver title.

Leg 1A at
Elementaita claimed seven cars. Ian Duncan didn’t start at KICC due to the
clutch problems he suffered at the spectator stage.

Robert Gow (car no.
35), car number 6 Subaru N8 of Riyaz Kurji, Rommy Bhamra (car no. 75), Sandip
Jandu (Subaru), Abdul Rehman (Subaru) and Rex Omole were the other Leg 1A
casualties.

Chager suffered two
punctures on CS3 Lake West upon an impact with a hidden rock. “We encountered two
punctures and lost seven minutes when we stopped to fix them. We even broke
both rims of the tyres. I didn’t see the rock. We just had to stop when we realized
we had punctures on the rear and front left tyres,” Chager said at first
service at Lake Elementaita Lodge.PROVISIONAL LEADERBOARD AS AT LEG 1B

CHAGER, CAVENAGH LEAD

Thousands of spectators were treated to a display of rallying artistry as Kenyan drivers dominated Day one’s Leg 1A of the KCB Safari Rally 2009 at Uhuru Park. Kenya’s Baldev Chager and Alastair Cavenagh were joint overnight leaders clocking 1.08minutes at the 0.94Km spectator stage at Uhuru park. Joint third in 1.09minutes were 2007 Kenya Champion Carl Tundo, Riyaz Kurji of Uganda, Emma Katto also from Uganda, Tanzania Pirelli star driver Navraj Hans and Rwandese Giancarlo Davite.

It was a bitter pill for series leaders , the Zimbabwean oldies Jamie Whyte and Phil Achenoul who could only manage 32nd position. Archenoul staunchly admitted they were not at home with short and tight stages. “We spun twice and lost quite some seconds. But I must admit that Kenyan boys are hot shots. Our strategy is to be near the podium and get top on the African Rally Championship list,” Archenoul said. Briton Ian Freestone in a Ford Escort RS was the overhinght leader in the supplementary class. Freestone clocked 1.13minutes beating vertarn Aslam Khan (Ford Escort RS) by four second. Jasmeet Chana led the 13 drivers in the 2WD class in 1.17minutes. 2009 KCB SAFARI RALLY

CONFIDENT MADISON RACING TEAM OFF TO KENYA SAFARI RALLY

From Ignatius Mazeko
LUSAKA, Tuesday

ZAMBIA’S representatives in the 2009 FIA African Rally Championship (ARC), Muna
Singh and Mohammed Essa this morning left Nairobi to compete in this weekend’s KCB
Safari Rally Kenya.

The two Madison Racing Team drivers left Lusaka International Airport by Kenya
Airways flight and were expected in Nairobi later in the day ahead of tomorrow and
Wednesday’s reconnaissance.

Their six-man service crew team, as well as Singh’s Botswana-based Zambian navigator
David Sihoka, left Lusaka by road in the early hours of Friday and were scheduled to
arrive in the Kenya capital today.

Essa’s caretaker Zimbabwean David Milner also left Harare by road last week in the
company of the crew of his compatriot James Whyte who leapfrogged Uganda Emmanuel
Katto to win the Kobil Rally of Tanzania in February.

However, the Zambians have promised to do thrive in the Safari, the second tier of
this season’s FIA-ARC series and the Pirelli Star Driver (PSD) competition.

Singh, the 2004 and 2005 African champion who will be driving a Madison Subaru
Impreza N10, said running on a standard gearbox his target would be to finish within
the points-scoring bracket.

On the other hand, 19-year-old Essa, an ABE, ACCA and CIMA student at Zambia Centre
for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS), is aiming for podium finish in the three-day 57th
edition of the Safari that has drawn 47 entries.

The teenager’s Madison Subaru N11 enters the Safari with a new crash box he recently
acquired from England to replaced the one that packed up during the Kobil Rally of
Tanzania.

Both Singh and Essa would be hoping to make amends after retiring from the Tanzania
rally with a broken control arm and damaged gearbox on day two and three
respectively.
