2006 Uganda Rally Results
RIYAZ KURJI AND SAYED KADRI WIN PEARL OF AFRICA UGANDA RALLY

uganda RIYAZ Kurji and Sayed Kadri in a Subaru N8 are the winners of the Alpha Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2006. The Ugandans but driving with a Kenya licence finished the three-day event in a total of 02:49:01. Foreign drivers occupied seven out top eight places.Richard Robinson of Zimbabwe in Evo6 finished second in a time of 02:53:05 seven second ahead of Ronald Ssebuguzi (Evo4) the only Ugandan driver to finish in the top eight.Azar Anwar Kenya champion and Safari winner in Evo6 finished fourth in a time of 02:56:19 after a road penalty was imposed by the event stewards.
Tanzania’s Omar Bakhressa was fifth in a time of 02:59:03. Reigning Africa champion Muna Singh/ David Sihoka of Zambia in a Subaru N10 were sixth in a time of 03:02:01 while another Tanzania’s Pano Calvarias was seventh in a time of 03:02:25. Paul Monge of Zambia finished eighth in a time of 03:02:49 Anwar leads the ARC with 15 points after three rounds. The next event is the South Africa Rally in Durban next month.

HOPES FOR CHAMPIONSHIP STILL ALIVE FOR KURJI

"I am back on track for the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) title," a delighted Riyaz Kurji told the Daily Monitor after winning the Alpha Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2006. Kurji’s becomes the second driver to win the Pearl of Africa Rally in consecutive years. Charlie Lubega three times winner won the event in 2003 and 2004.The Alpha rally team driver navigated by Sayed Kadri in a Subaru N8 clocked a time of 02:49:01 nearly five minutes over second placed Richard Robinson of Zimbabwe driving Evo6. Kurji also said the win was for his fans who were disappointed when he dropped out in the Kenya Safari last month. He also thanked his mechanics for the good work done.He also said that he is going to participate in the next three rounds of ARC the South Africa Rally next month, Zimbabwe and Zambia events in June and July respectively.


Ronald Ssebuguzi/ Bedi Lubambula in a Jomayi sponsored Mitsubishi Evo4 finished third but more significantly strengthened his chances of winning this year’s National Rally Championship (NRC).Lwakataka who lead on day two suffered an alternator problem in after competitive sections 16 and 17.He managed to fix the alternator but lost a lot of time. Another top Ugandan Emmaunel Katta and Rwabogo Businge crashed out early on the second Leg when he under-steered off road at very high speed.

Alpha Dairy Products the main sponsors milked in Shs200m. Speke Resort Hotel Munyonyo, Packaging Technology, Dolphin Suites, Neon City, WBS TV, Simba FM, CBS FM, Coca Cola, Caltex Oil, MTN, Rwenzori Mineral Waters, Fire Masters and First General were cosponsors.27 cars started the rally with only 3 Group S cars and 18 cars finished with the last 5 being classified under the new Superally rules. The rally was run over a distance of 816.85 km with 264.85 being competitive sections.
