2006 Tanzania Rally Results
BELGIAN PATRICK EMONTSPOOL AND ALAIN ROBERT ARE EVENTUAL WINNERS IN THE 2006 RALLY OF TANZANIA - Muna Singh's win disqualfied at Final Scrutineering

Belgian's Patrick Emontspool and Alain Robert were declared the eventual winners of the 2006 Toit Rally of Tanzania - Round 1 of the FIA African Rally Championship this year. Second overall only by 23 seconds was Paul Monge and Ray Thornicraft of Zambia who would have won the rally but for a navigators error of one minute early check-in at a service out control. The regining Champions Muna Singh and David Sihoka who led for almost the whole rally were disqualifed at final scrutineering when the the rear lower control arms were found to have illegal reinforcement. Muna who was using a borrowed rally car supplied by 'Sunvic' accepted the decision of the Stewards.

It was "a flying start" for Partick Emontspool's African Rally Championship campaign which he has made plans to contest the whole championship with two cars in a team. The latest model Subaru Impreza N12 rally cars are fully prepared with a big service barge and trailer to drive around Africa. A very impressive field of 23 cars with 21 homologated N4 cars started the main rally and early the early pacesetter was Riyaz Kurji and Sayed Kadri of Uganda in their Subaru Impreza opening out a lead of 6 minutes but then crashed and lost a rear whell against a sand bank.

Kurji rejoined the event under the new 'Superally' rules but only managed a 10th place finish at the end. Zimbabweans Richard Robinson / Colin Schrieber and Jamie Whyte / Phil Archenoul, both in Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 5's had both mechanical problems and punctures and eventually finished 6th and 15th overall respectively. Top Tanzanian driver for the second year running was 22 year old Navraj Hanes from Arusha and codriver Frank Gitau of Kenya. Tanzania's Omar Bakhresa and Maisam Fazal were 4th overall with fellow country men Pano Calavaris and Moses Matovu in 5th place. 18 cars were declared finishers.
